First of all, for those of you who voted, consider yourselves lucky, its quite a luxury to be able to have the final say…even though 10 years ago, our final say may have been altered [cough] Dade County, FL [cough]. As residents of California, we are happy with some of the results! Governor-Elect Brown, Lt. Gov-Elect Newsom, Sen. Boxer and others. However, we are unsettled by our home state of Illinois since Mark Kirk was elected US Senator-an anti-Gay individual who may cause trouble for himself more than others. READ HERE from Towleroad.
Why we picked out Mark Kirk to talk about is that there is this denial in the air. The air is thick with denial. Untruthful candidates-not that surprising, but do politicians have to change because of the 24 hr news cycle, and blogs? Or do they just have to be honest of who they are, where they are coming from, and maybe ask “Where will I be in X amount of years?” Will I be honest about who I am, telling my constituents that I was honest with them or myself, or just plain lied? It may be a victory for Mark Kirk, but the closet doors are creaking, and if the doors do open, what then?
We usually hate this question when asked in interviews, but if we really thought about it in a grand scale and asked candidates Where will you, your home life, your private life, sex life, future bills, future votes, strengths, and pending weaknesses will you see by the end of your first term? There would be some interesting answers. It needs to be asked more.
Soon we will hear Judge Vaughn Walker’s verdict of the Perry vs. Schwarzenegger case. We hope that it will be in favor of the plaintiffs, however, either way it will end up in the chamber of the U.S. Supreme Court. With their latest 5-4, right-leaning decision in the case where corporations can fund campaigns, it foreshadows the possible 5-4, right-leaning vote in favor of defining marriage between 1 man and 1 woman. We could be wrong and we hope we are. NO one is going to stop our marriage…our beat will go on. If justice is denied, we will keep fighting.
Sad news for New Jersey…Gay Marriage was defeated, but we did learn of some great allies and sponsors for gay marriage…
“Whats love got to do with it…EVERYTHING. We can change fear to love, hate to compassion, cruelty to kindness.” -Senator Lesniak
“You don’t have to go 1,000 years to define marriage, you can go to 1967 when a white person (man or woman) could not marry a black person (man or woman) in the case of Loving vs. Virginia”
You can’t change the fact that national companies are defining benefits as same-sex couples who are married.”-Senator Nia Gill
Senator Baroni made some great points too-finally a senator talking about ERISA, which we all know will eternally stand in the way of civil unions working. Oh WAIT, civil unions don’t have to work, we were married.
Because of ERISA companies that provide their own insurance instead of purchasing larger coverage are then only beholden to federal insurance laws, which we all know does not recognize state based civil unions. So we need to solve marriage-not rework an old idea of laws. Civil Unions are todays separate but UNequal government approved parameters and laws like ERISA, insurance and tax laws keep civil unions separate and UNequal.
Think of how insane it was that separate water fountains existed! Marriage is the only solution-marraige for all, congratulations New Jersey.
Less than an hour before the vote the President of the New Jersey Senate President Richard Coder said it was doomed to fail and would not have the support to pass today. Unfortunately his prediction came true. 21-Nay, 14 Yeh
