President Anibal Cavaco Silva has ratified Gay Marriage! Last month we wrote how he was going to veto it, but Portugal’s president has decided to allow same sex marriage to happen! To READ MORE CLICK HERE

Very unfortunate news for Portugal. After the Pope Benedict XVI’s scheduled visit to Portugal in May, President Anibal Cavaco Silva stated that he will veto the Gay Marriage bill which was passed by lawmakers in February 2010. If President Cavaco Silva would have signed the bill, it would have made same-sex marriage LEGAL in Portugal. Cavaco Silva is a PSD party member (Partido Social Democrata) and a Roman Catholic (majority of PSD party members and Catholics are against same-sex marriage).

Portugal’s president will not make his veto until after May 11th, so we hope that Gay and Lesbian citizens of Portugal will use their voices and be heard so that equality will fill the entire Iberian peninsula. There is always still hope!

Owned by Chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, Ciudad is a hip restaurant with a great menu. Ciudad indulges guests with meals from all Latin countries of South America, Central America, Cuba, Spain, and Portugal. We went there last Friday and enjoyed portions of their menu!

Feniger, a Lesbian and her Straight ally Milliken have worked together for years in Paris, Chicago, and now settled in Los Angeles. People remember them most from their show Too Hot Tamales on the Food Network.

Same sex couples have one more door to open, however the high court in Portugal has given the green light in support for same-sex marriage along with Parliament.

All it needs is President Anibal Cavaco Silva’s signature to make the bill the law and its a go!
