LGBT Person You Should Know-Storme DeLarverie

June 29, 2010

Screen shot 2010-06-28 at 9.08.25 PMStorme-a force of nature, who now resides in Room 609 of a nursing home in Brooklyn. She’s a Lesbian who was there that night working as a bouncer at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Storme DeLarverie fought for her rights, and is allegedly The cross-dressed bouncer who was first beaten by the police which commenced the riots (that lady was never identified). Unfortunately, Dementia has taken over the 89 year old heroine, but does remember things here and there. DeLarverie remembers being a Jewel Box Revue performer at the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Clearly, if Ms. DeLarverie’s memoirs existed, it would be something to sink yourself into and marvel at this woman’s fight for rights before the fight started.

Even though she was weak on the Pride holiday, DeLarverie had her mind focused to go to the parade. During the interview she took off her slippers and looked for her walking shoes with the intentions to attend, however her body is too weak to participate, but her heart still marches onward. Thank you Storme DeLarverie, you are a true inspiration. To read more CLICK HERE

New Hope for Michigan, check out Scott Withers for Congress

March 11, 2010

LGBT candidates are good for all of us, regardless of your party leanings.  Scott Withers is running for US Congress shapeimage_1in Michigan’s 5th District. which fosters both beautiful parts of Michigan, but also some of the area’s hardest hit in the country by the home foreclosure crises and job loss rates.

Scott has a great deal of good plans for Mid-Michigan, and he may well be the change this part of the country needs right now. Learn more about Scott on his website here.  Candidates like these who are fighting to make their homes a better place by supporting small and mid-sized businesses, while creating jobs, will be so important to this country’s reemergence. These have been lean years for many and if we are going to recover there has to be new ways of thinking. At it’s core, this is why we elected Obama, new ideas within and changing the old political machine. We as a country wanted a changing of the guard, it looks like Michigan will get that same opportunity this year. We’ll keep you posted, this will be a early race to watch. Let us know your thoughts?

We’ve posted portions of his issues platform after the jump

Mr. Rustin LIVED his life.  He was talented, well-educated, well-traveled, gay, outspoken, and broke down barriers along with other great activists. Rustin co-organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.

When reflecting on his own life he acknowledged: “The principal factors which influenced my life are 1) nonviolent tactics; 2) constitutional means; 3) democratic procedures; 4) respect for human personality; 5) a belief that all people are one.”

Geoffrey Morrell It Is Time To Change

January 29, 2010

morellGeoffrey Morrell the Pentagon Press Secretary became a little defensive when asked if the President Obama’s was going to pledge during the State of the Union to end DADT. Now we understand that the question posed by the journalist was more garnered for the the White House press room.

However, Mr. Morrell, the Commander and Chief has made his wishes clear, it needs to end this year.  We hope this wasn’t lip service from the White House, one signing order could change the implementation of DADT.  We understand that there is a lot on your proverbiale “desk,” it’s time to clear out the inbox, and let’em be OUT!

Here’s an old ad for a laugh: Why do I fear that some narrow-minded people fear this is what the army will look like after the end of DADT!

Brad and Angelina Ask Us to Stop With The Rumor Mill- Remember Our Friends

January 29, 2010

JolieandPittSo we’ve all been apart of the Brad and Angie break up rumor mill. Here is where it stands now, they are together, period. The rumors really hit a fervor when the couple became involved with a known LA super power custody attorney. They are NOT married and met with the attorney to assure their family’s future in the event of a tragedy. This is what responsible parents do, unfortunately this only fueled the separation rumor mill.  So let us as a community give them the benefit of the doubt, especially given that Brad Pitt alone gave $100,000 to fight against Prop 8

We love their public stance on not tying the knot, like in the August issue of Parade Magazine “I have love in my life, a soul mate–absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don’t get married, I replied, ‘Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else.’ I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it–hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say Gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I’ve had the privilege of seeing my Gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment.” (jared)

Mitch Ward, Mayor of Manhattan Beach, CA

January 20, 2010

mitch ward

Monday was MLK Day and we hope everyone participated in service activities.  We wanted to share with you a great quote from that day, one from Mayor Mitch Ward of Manhattan Beach: “Today I join all Americans in honoring one of our pioneers in civil rights, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Mayor Mitch Ward.

“Marching in this beautiful rain here in the streets of South Los Angeles I walk proudly amongst hundreds of others living Dr. King’s dream. And we shall go much further. On behalf of all the residents of Manhattan Beach, I say happy birthday to an American legend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Ward’s upcoming race for Assembly will be historical and we will keep you posted here on EJ.  We are fan’s of what he has accomplished in Manhattan Beach and know he would be a strong leader for our community as an assembly member.

“Mayor Ward is the first African American elected to City Council in Manhattan Beach. He is a leading candidate in the 53rd Assembly District in California. If elected he will be the first openly gay and married assembly member from the 53rd District in California and the first African American in the LGBT caucus in Sacramento. Mayor Mitch Ward is the only publicly elected official vying for the 53rd District open seat being vacated by Assembly Member Ted Lieu.”(via: MitchWard.com)

Learn more about Mayor Ward on his site here and let him know how much his leadership is needed even more now within our community.  We wish him the best and keep watching for updates on the race.

LGBT Person You Should Know-Mark Kleinschmidt, Mayor of Chapel Hill, N.C., USA

January 5, 2010

Picture 2We love informing others of the openly LGBT people who hold office in our country…and the numbers are increasing!

For the residents of Chapel Hill, NC., they are very fortunate to have a well-educated and well-traveled mayor.  We also like that he is originally from Illinois.

Openly Gay, Mark Kleinschmidt earned both his juris doctorate and bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he also attended Universidad de las Americas.

He was born at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, and lived in Hawaii and New Mexico before moving to North Carolina at the young age of 10.
