Bullying-No Excuses For It

January 18, 2011

We could make some poignant thought about why bullying is wrong, we could go into statistics, we could be all high-brow and pontificate about how wrong it is, but seriously, we are at a writers’ block of how to take the global problem of bullying the LGBT community and stuff it into a blog post that is randomly read.

Here is 1 example: imagine watching a baseball game, and a group of adult men sing the alternate lyrics of Y-M-C-A (Y-R-U-Gay) and you and your friend, just the two of you, are just 18 years old (yes you are considered an adult, but I definitely was still figuring things out then) just sitting in the bleachers enjoying a baseball game and having to take on the banter from immature men and watch others laugh at you who are NOT DOING ANYTHING TO STOP THEM! Where’s John Quinones and his segment “What would you do?” when you need it?  So watch the clip above and make your own opinion.

Our opinion, to the haters out there: find something better to do than bullying. Yes, bullying will always be around like air pollution, but guess what, we can actually ignore disruptors of peace. Let the bullies tire themselves out by spending massive amounts of energy critiquing others and over time, they won’t even find out who they are themselves.  To anyone who has been bullied, LOVE yourself, be who you are, and most of all do NOT harm yourself.

Gay Couple in High School Hold High Court at Prom

June 14, 2010

Royal_crown_of_Sweden“Charlie Ferrusi, and his prom queen, Timmy Howard.  Both boys (yes, BOTH are male) are Gay and both couldn’t believe it when they heard their names announced for king and queen at the dance Saturday night.”

Hudson, NY took on a different reaction-a supportive one! Hudson is proud of the results and couldn’t be happier. Ferrusi’s mother gushed at the news and always told her son to be who he is and that we are all equal.

Congrats to the Prom King and Queen or King and King, we will have to rename high school titles with the ever-changing, progressive times :)

In Albany, NY the state senate rejected GENDA-the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act. Basically, it is LEGAL to discriminate against the Transgender community in regards to housing, employment, and service. Harvey Milk High School

May 25, 2010

Harvey_Milk_High_School_Entrance_by_David_Shankbone“We envision a school where all students are challenged to question the world around them, to develop healthy, personal identities, to participate in meaningful civic and social experiences that will allow them to formulate and realize their educational and career goals. We seek to cultivate an inclusive, academic program emphasizing literacy, technology infusion, and life-long learning skills. With the support of the extensive services provided by The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) and the involvement of our students’ parents/guardians in the educational process, we envision all members in the school community to share accountability for the creation and maintenance of a safe, supportive, academically rigorous, and standards-driven learning environment.”

Founded in 1985, Harvey Milk High School became a fully accredited 4 year high school in 2002. The school provides a safe haven for students of the LGBT population, but is open to ALL students regardless of sexuality and gender identity. To learn more CLICK HERE

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

May 7, 2010

gayicecream1-149x300Though not in NYC, we loved virtually following the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck all summer long, make sure you don’t miss it this summer.

THE BIG GAY ICE CREAM TRUCK we hear tastes as good as it looks. One post on their site has a description of the “Monday Sunday is a waffle cone lined with Nutella, twist ice cream, Dulce de Leche, sea salt, and whipped cream.”

That sounds like a perfect summer anxiety cure.

How About Promoting Gay Acceptance?

February 4, 2010

Map_of_Long_Island_NY

Stupendous idea right?

The Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) invested $37,000 in ads on public transport. One of their ads simply state “I am Gay and this is where I Play”-this particular ad shows men playing basketball, and simply living as who they are, no closet doors, no shame, or stereotypes.

Congrats to LIGALY for a simple concept that will be an impact on the youth of Long Island and beyond. Check out their site and you will find more of their ads to enjoy.

Monday Cure: Ice Cream.

December 7, 2009

Shake the cold weather blues by thinking of ICE CREAM!

gayicecreamThough not in NYC we loved virtually following the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck all summer long, make sure you don’t miss it this summer.  So when the weather is crummy, we want to reminisce on warmer times, we check out one of our favorite summer time guilty pleasures.

THE BIG GAY ICE CREAM TRUCK we hear tastes as good as it looks. One post on their site has a description of the “Monday Sunday is a waffle cone lined with Nutella, twist ice cream, Dulce de Leche, sea salt, and whipped cream.” That sounds like a perfect Monday cure… once a month.

They recently had their season closing party but will be returning to the streets in the spring.  We’ll be in NYC and won’t miss the opportunity again.  What a great idea, its big, its gay, its ice cream!
