Michigan Update

May 13, 2010

shapeimage_1Equal Junction loves new ideas and independent thinkers-we too believe they are the best vehicles for change and the cultivation of a better future for us all. Michigan needs new ideas, badly! It was just ranked by CEO’s as the 3rd worst state for businesses in the US.  It is in more trouble than anyone wants/or is fully willing to admit. Except for Scott Withers and his Congressional Campaign, dedicated to doing just that, APPROACHING THE PROBLEMS WITH NEW IDEAS.

We’ve written about Wither’s campaign for Congress and now we hear news from the campaign that they, a grassroots campaign, have been approached by the democratic leadership in Michigan-Mark Brewer. Mr. Brewer within a minute of their first conversation requested that Mr. Wither’s DROP OUT of the race! WTF Dem’s! Stop hiding from the independent thinkers.  Us Young Dem’s are supposed to be the independent thinkers and the patrons of bringing more people, while supporting diverse views to the table.

With an 34 year incumbent (Dale Kildee) the Democratic party should be supporting an open debate between it’s candidates as we enjoyed during the 2008 election. Currently, Michigan is in a free fall and Scott’s commitment to new industries, green technology, education, and a creative background is what this disenfranchised population needs. One of the reasons our party is taking so many hits form the far sides is we’re not acting like the progressives, we claim to be, within our own party.  Rep Kildee has a weak record on everything, period.  Ask anyone in Flint, MI if they feel their Congressman for 34 years has been there for them? When we first met Scott he asked us, with family ties through out the Midwest, “Has Mid-Michigan gotten any better?” It certainly is not going to get any better if the same people continue to run Michigan in the same way.  Check back to EqualJunction later when the press release goes out.

Hope College Does Not Live Up to it’s Name

May 11, 2010

776px-Map_of_Michigan_NAHope is in limbo right now due to it’s out-of-date policy.

“Alumni, student, and community groups in a coordinated effort each had petitioned the board of trustees to drop a 1995 policy on homosexuality that condemns homosexual acts and gay advocacy, but supports “fair and kind treatment for people with a homosexual orientation” and the academic discussion of issues related to homosexuality.”

A petition arose to drop this policy due to the school’s banning of a visit from Academy Award winning writer, Dustin Lance Black, to host a screening of Milk on the college campus.

Hope College’s Board of Trustees released this statement, “The college’s current position on homosexuality is based on its interpretation of scripture. It is recognized that well-intentioned Christians may disagree on scriptural interpretation. Still, humbly and respectfully, the college aligns itself in its interpretation with its founding denomination, the Reformed Church in America, the orthodox Christian Church throughout the ages, and other Christian colleges and universities.”

This is very disappointing, a college that is named Hope, gave no hope to its LGBT students or alumni.

End of the Week and At Work? Have Back Pain?…It May Be Your Chair?

April 23, 2010

HermanMiller60sFlickrHermanMillerAeron

Look at your office chair, go ahead, look at it, comfortable?  If not, Herman Miller may be a solution. Yes, they can be pricey, but there is good reason to spend that much on office furniture.  For multiple years, they received a top rating by the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index for its impeccable, equal treatment of the LGBT employees.  We love their furniture!!!

Thursday,  April 22 @ 8:00pm, EST.

Steven Brinberg is “Simply Barbra

Tickets: $15 AVAILABLE AT WWW.ACORNTHEATER.COM OR BY CALLING 269-756-3879.

Slick, polished and professional: that would fit Ms Barbra Streisand, and also Steven Brinberg’s wicked impersonation of her. Using her vocal style and mannerisms and range, Brinberg brings the feel of an intimate concert with the lady herself to the stage.

From the opening number until the final curtain, Brinberg is scarily accurate in capturing the idiosyncrasies of the famous lady. His vocals can be spot-on as a direct impersonation.  Interspersing the songs with dialogue in Streisand’s own style, with comments about places she has been, her husband and family, and concerts and films she has acted in, the evening is true entertainment.

Brinberg has appeared as Streisand alongside Marvin Hamlisch and has performed as Streisand at a birthday party for Donna Karan.  Brinberg impersonates a series of other singers all of whom seem to have recorded the same track, Alfie.  Treat yourself and your special someone to A Simply Barbra as we celebrate the birth week of Streisand herself as this legendary star plays Acorn Theater one-night-only to serenade fans.

New Hope for Michigan, check out Scott Withers for Congress

March 11, 2010

LGBT candidates are good for all of us, regardless of your party leanings.  Scott Withers is running for US Congress shapeimage_1in Michigan’s 5th District. which fosters both beautiful parts of Michigan, but also some of the area’s hardest hit in the country by the home foreclosure crises and job loss rates.

Scott has a great deal of good plans for Mid-Michigan, and he may well be the change this part of the country needs right now. Learn more about Scott on his website here.  Candidates like these who are fighting to make their homes a better place by supporting small and mid-sized businesses, while creating jobs, will be so important to this country’s reemergence. These have been lean years for many and if we are going to recover there has to be new ways of thinking. At it’s core, this is why we elected Obama, new ideas within and changing the old political machine. We as a country wanted a changing of the guard, it looks like Michigan will get that same opportunity this year. We’ll keep you posted, this will be a early race to watch. Let us know your thoughts?

We’ve posted portions of his issues platform after the jump
