“Its Time to Get Off the Gay Plantation”

April 21, 2010

wardMayor Mitch Ward said it best “it is time to get off the Gay plantation!” Thank you Mayor!  He truly is the whole package for our community. Get this-a town (Manhattan Beach, CA) with a balanced budget, and a Mayor really committed to education and green technologies. All with the business savvy to protect the industrial jobs for his community’s future and champion these corporations commitment a greener future for all of us. Now, if this sounds too good to be true, here are some numbers supporting that he is his community’s choice in the 53rd assembly race here in Cali.

“Manhattan Beach Mayor Mitch Ward is well ahead in the race for the Democratic nomination in the 53rd AD. A telephone survey of 400 voters conducted by Goodwin Simon Strategic Research between February 23 and 25 finds that Mitch Ward starts with a lead based on his ballot title and solid geographic base. He easily expands that lead to a wide margin because he offers an appealing story and record that suit exactly the priorities of the electorate. Specifically:

  • Ward starts with 13%, more than three times the proportion initially voting for the others. For example, we found 4% for James Lau, 4% for Kate Anderson, 3% for Betsy Butler, and lower amounts for the other candidates.
  • When voters learn more about the candidates in detailed and fair paragraphs, Ward takes a dominating lead, at 32% to just 9% for each of the other main candidates.
  • Ward is the only candidate representing the South Bay cities, which comprise about two of three voters in the district. This is the same advantage that helped elect the two previous assembly members in this district.

Now, last week was a big week for Ward’s campaign, because no candidate in the race was able to win the Democratic party endorsement  at the convention, leaving it up to the voters. So what happened with the Stonewall Dem’s endorsing another candidate in the race? In our opinion, they were voting like party liners that night and forgot they were representatives of Stonewall. Mayor Ward is a proud married and Gay member of our community, a Mayor loved by his constituents, and a friend of Equal Junction. Even if you don’t live in his district or here in Cali, get to know Mayor Mitch Ward, you’ll want him to be your future elected official soon. All we want is a seat at the table for us married couples. What a novice idea for ensuring our future! For more info CLICK HERE

Mayor Mitch Ward and EQCA

March 18, 2010

Earlier in the week, we did this post on Mayor Ward and his encounter with EQCA, please read below and find out what you can do to support Mayor Ward.

If you don’t know who Mitch Ward is yet, get on board and watch the video above!  Mayor Ward of Manhattan Beach is the front-runner for the 53rd assembly race here in California. There are two polls currently showing Mitch way out in front of his opponents.  Mayor Ward is the ONLY LGBT candidate in the race and he is kicking ass and taking names. Rarely do you meet an elected official, and we meet a lot of them, as sincere, caring, and truly passionate about his community. We’ve been honored to speak with the Mayor at a few events recently and each time he is beaming with a piece of new great news about the 53rd District. We don’t often gush over local politicians, but we expect to be following Ward for a long time and expect great things from him in the future. Here at EJ, we are often asked, where are the next great political leaders of the equality movement? Mitch Ward knows the fight and is ready to make equality a reality here in California.  Mitch Ward can bring so much to the state assembly for so many communities that we all need to become fans of Mitch Ward and let him know he has the LGBT community support as the race heats up.

Read more and find out what WE ALL CAN DO after the jump…

Exclusive look into the White House, LGBT Mayor at the White House

January 21, 2010

mitch wardEqualjunction.com’s friend Mayor Mitch Ward of Manhattan Beach, CA is in D.C. at the White House with President Obama.  He was kind enough to share these thoughts exclusively  with equal junction after the meeting:

“It was a high honor and privilege to stand before President Obama today with the nations mayors. I stressed to the President that we need more stimulus dollars targeted to local cities directly. He agreed and indicated mayors are on the front line of helping him turn our economy around. Listening to President Obama speak of the disastrous state in which the US economy was when he took office and where we are now on the road to recovery reaffirms my pride and confidence in the Obama Administration. I look forward to working with President Obama at the local level and when I arrive in Sacramento so that we can move Manhattan Beach, California and the nation forward toward prosperity again.”

A big thanks from EqualJunction to Mayor Mitch Ward (Manhattan Beach, CA) for sharing with us.  He is curently in Washington, DC for the US Conference of Mayors. He welcomes the opportunity to meet you, hear your concerns and share his objectives for when elected to Sacramento. Mayor Ward was the first African American elected in Manhattan Beach, CA. He would be the first openly gay assembly member of the 53rd District in California.  He would also  be the first African American in the LGBT caucus in Sacramento, a group highly under-represented within all levels of government.

If in DC and want to meet Mayor Ward attend this event this evening:

  • Thursday, January 21, 2010
  • Time: 5:30pm-7pm
  • Where: Veritas, 2031 Florida Ave., NW, Washington DC

Learn more about Mayor Mitch Ward: CLICK HERE make sure to support the candidates that are supporting us.  Equal Junction will keep you posted on where to meet and talk with Mayor Ward once he returns to Cali. Starting February 2nd Mayor Ward will spend Tuesday mornings, 7am, having coffee with his constituents and anyone else who has a question at Manhattan Beach Bread and Bagel.  We’ll be there.
