Bayard Rustin-the man behind the Civil Rights March in 1963
Mr. Rustin LIVED his life. He was talented, well-educated, well-traveled, Gay, outspoken, and broke down barriers along with other great activists. Rustin co-organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.
When reflecting on his own life he acknowledged: “The principal factors which influenced my life are 1) nonviolent tactics; 2) constitutional means; 3) democratic procedures; 4) respect for human personality; 5) a belief that all people are one.”

Nickie Antonio will be the first openly Lesbian lawmaker from Ohio. According to Gaypolitics.com,
“The independent candidate who was to be Nickie Antonio’s sole opponent in her State House race has withdrawn, meaning she will become the first openly LGBT state lawmaker in Ohio. She will still stand for election this fall, but now Antonio’s name will be the only one on the ballot for this seat. Antonio, who now sits on the Lakewood, Ohio City Council, won the Democratic primary May 4, and no Republican filed in the heavily Democratic district that includes parts of Cleveland and Lakewood. When she’s seated, Ohio will finally come off the list of states with no openly LGBT lawmakers in their state legislatures. That will leave 18 states still on the list, including Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.”
Dorothy Height overcame adversity at a time when African-Americans were not granted equal rights. Her last name reflects how she soared went in life. When many women, no matter what race, did not commonly continue education past high school or lower, Height received a masters degree in educational psychology from NYU in 1933!
Ms. Dorothy Height witnessed every civil rights march and of course participated as well. She was a top advisor to many. Height had the attention of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, President Eisenhower, and President Johnson. What truly touched us was that she advised Elizabeth Birch, former president of the HRC for LGBT rights when ENDA had its initial vote in ‘96.
Height died at 98 on April 20th. She witnessed woman and African-Americans fight for their rights when they had little to then see an African-American man become President of the United States. Because of people like Dorothy Height, a legacy will be left full of leaders and citizens of all genders, races, creeds, colors, and religions, a who will continue to work together to create a more perfect union.
Mayor Annise Parker has done justice by signing an executive order that will ban employee discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
This is a great protection for LGBT employees. According to mnpublius.com, out of the 50 states in the U.S., an employee can be fired for being either Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender in almost 30 states.
Thank you Mayor Parker for signing this order for your people of Houston, it will be priceless to all those employees.
LGBT candidates are good for all of us, regardless of your party leanings. Scott Withers is running for US Congress in Michigan’s 5th District. which fosters both beautiful parts of Michigan, but also some of the area’s hardest hit in the country by the home foreclosure crises and job loss rates.
Scott has a great deal of good plans for Mid-Michigan, and he may well be the change this part of the country needs right now. Learn more about Scott on his website here. Candidates like these who are fighting to make their homes a better place by supporting small and mid-sized businesses, while creating jobs, will be so important to this country’s reemergence. These have been lean years for many and if we are going to recover there has to be new ways of thinking. At it’s core, this is why we elected Obama, new ideas within and changing the old political machine. We as a country wanted a changing of the guard, it looks like Michigan will get that same opportunity this year. We’ll keep you posted, this will be a early race to watch. Let us know your thoughts?

Sorry to hear there were arrests- but good for the group Queer Rising in NYC. Four of the groups members were arrested this morning after chaining themselves to the door of NY marriage licenses office. They blocked the door while other same sex couples were denied the right to marry inside. This protest was well planned and a successful act of civil disobedience. We have been apart of such protests in the past and as scary as they can be, it is so important to plan ahead and a goal. Arrests are usually inevitable. As part of the 18,000 married here in California we applaud their actions- everyone should be fighting for equality in their own way, this is their way. Learn more here at Queer New York or learn more about Queer Rising here.
