TODAY IS SWEARING-IN DAY! Perez was sworn in as Speaker of the California Assembly.
Felicidades John A. Perez!
Latino, Gay, Son of a Laborer, and native of California, Perez is the new Speaker of the California Assembly-the first openly gay Speaker in the U.S.
Assemblyman Perez (46th Dist.) is not only the Speaker of the CA Assembly, he is a Speaker for the people of California. He deeply understands the struggles of California’s working families. His history includes fighting for higher wages and benefits for labor workers. In addition, Perez is as an elected member of the Democratic National Committee, board member for the California League of Conservation Voters, AIDS Project Los Angeles, the Latino Coalition against AIDS, the California Center for Regional Leadership, and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.

1/2 of our family is Mexican. On my father’s side, I am 1st generation, and on my mother’s, I am 3rd. So being Hispanic and Gay, that intertwines a myriad of topics such as family, religion, sexuality.
According to the Pew Research Center, there is a growing acceptance of LGBT from the Hispanic community. On gay-marriage rights, nearly 40 % of young immigrants and second-generation Hispanics say they are in favor of them. For Hispanics that are 3rd generation and higher, the percentage increases up to 52 % in favor of same-sex marriage rights.
I am very fortunate to have an accepting family and I hope and pray other families, no matter of race, class, or religion will embrace their LGBT relatives so that family pride will be stronger than ever.
Side Note: if you did not know already, Assembly of California made a huge step by appointing the 1st openly Gay, and Latino, Assemblyman John A. Perez as Speaker of the CA Assembly. Again, Congrats!
