“We envision a school where all students are challenged to question the world around them, to develop healthy, personal identities, to participate in meaningful civic and social experiences that will allow them to formulate and realize their educational and career goals. We seek to cultivate an inclusive, academic program emphasizing literacy, technology infusion, and life-long learning skills. With the support of the extensive services provided by The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) and the involvement of our students’ parents/guardians in the educational process, we envision all members in the school community to share accountability for the creation and maintenance of a safe, supportive, academically rigorous, and standards-driven learning environment.”
Founded in 1985, Harvey Milk High School became a fully accredited 4 year high school in 2002. The school provides a safe haven for students of the LGBT population, but is open to ALL students regardless of sexuality and gender identity. To learn more CLICK HERE
Dorothy Height overcame adversity at a time when African-Americans were not granted equal rights. Her last name reflects how she soared went in life. When many women, no matter what race, did not commonly continue education past high school or lower, Height received a masters degree in educational psychology from NYU in 1933!
Ms. Dorothy Height witnessed every civil rights march and of course participated as well. She was a top advisor to many. Height had the attention of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, President Eisenhower, and President Johnson. What truly touched us was that she advised Elizabeth Birch, former president of the HRC for LGBT rights when ENDA had its initial vote in ‘96.
Height died at 98 on April 20th. She witnessed woman and African-Americans fight for their rights when they had little to then see an African-American man become President of the United States. Because of people like Dorothy Height, a legacy will be left full of leaders and citizens of all genders, races, creeds, colors, and religions, a who will continue to work together to create a more perfect union.
In a nutshell, there is not much on the surface for the LGBT community from the Healthcare Reform that was passed. According to the Advocate, “the only related LGBT-specific provision in the current legislation deal with costs accrued by AIDS Drug Assistance Programs when providing prescription drugs to patients. The measure prevents Medicare patients with HIV/AIDS who receive prescription medication assistance from being subject to other prescription drug costs.” However, according to Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) with this passing, it does open doors for future provisions to benefit LGBT’s in healthcare. Read MORE
What to expect? Well for a couple who are born in the LGBT world, we will put it in these words: its like Christmas eve when you don’t celebrate the holiday. We still give well wishes for this bill to pass so that MORE people will benefit from this healthcare reform…but LGBT’s definitely got the piece of coal. We have to do better, there is the art of the possible.
Back in 1950, the word TEMPERAMENTAL was a code word for HOMOSEXUAL. Written by Jon Marans, directed by Jon Silverstein, and starring Michael Urie, “The Temperamentals” tells the story about two Gay men, Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich, who fall in love and form the first Gay rights organization in pre-Stonewall U.S. If you are in NYC, check it out! Since, they Vancouver holding the Winter 2010 Olympics, we thought we would share this history of marriage in Canada with you. This is a shout-out to our readers in Canada!!! We love our northern neighbors!
July 20, 2005, Same-sex marriage became nationally legal with the enactment of the Civil Marriage Act! However, prior to the Act, in 2003, some provinces and territories already legalized same-sex marriage. In ‘99, before he was The 21st Prime Minister of Canada, Minister of Finance, Paul Martin, originally opposed same-sex marriage, but after he became Prime Minister, his personal belief acknowledged same-sex marriage as a human rights issue and now same-sex marriage is legal across Canada.
History only repeats itself if we don’t learn from our mistakes. We are married, and every American should have to the right to do so. We will accept nothing less than equality for our children’s and our country’s future. Neither should you.
Equaljunction.com’s friend Mayor Mitch Ward of Manhattan Beach, CA is in D.C. at the White House with President Obama. He was kind enough to share these thoughts exclusively with equal junction after the meeting:
“It was a high honor and privilege to stand before President Obama today with the nations mayors. I stressed to the President that we need more stimulus dollars targeted to local cities directly. He agreed and indicated mayors are on the front line of helping him turn our economy around. Listening to President Obama speak of the disastrous state in which the US economy was when he took office and where we are now on the road to recovery reaffirms my pride and confidence in the Obama Administration. I look forward to working with President Obama at the local level and when I arrive in Sacramento so that we can move Manhattan Beach, California and the nation forward toward prosperity again.”
A big thanks from EqualJunction to Mayor Mitch Ward (Manhattan Beach, CA) for sharing with us. He is curently in Washington, DC for the US Conference of Mayors. He welcomes the opportunity to meet you, hear your concerns and share his objectives for when elected to Sacramento. Mayor Ward was the first African American elected in Manhattan Beach, CA. He would be the first openly gay assembly member of the 53rd District in California. He would also be the first African American in the LGBT caucus in Sacramento, a group highly under-represented within all levels of government.
If in DC and want to meet Mayor Ward attend this event this evening:
Thursday, January 21, 2010

We know it is dark but we can’t resist, we want to open this skull and read all the secrets in side. Christie’s Auction house, has not done enough for the gay community given how gay auction houses inherently are. Art history, impulse shopping, and treasure hunting are shared hobby’s. Maybe giving them some face time here will encourage them to step up; encourage them yourself here.
Here is the Item we want. On January 22 Christie’s will auction off an 1872 Skull ballot box, from the real Yale Skull and Bones Society. This is the box where they kept all their secrets during their initiation process. There is a hinged top on the skull for voting in their rituals and includes charred bones and a book including some of the members names and “activities.” Hmmmmm the mind wonders. There have been so many powerful men including the jack ass former President W. Bush, Senator John Kerry, and the subject of a Joshua Jackson movie with two sequels. (Who ever knew there was a Skulls III?) The box is expected to sell for $10,000 to $20,000, you don’t even have to wrap it.
