Hate Crime in Savannah, Georgia…

June 14, 2010

SavannahYes, hate crimes can happen anywhere, anytime, but in Savannah, GA, USA, a state with no hate crime laws, now must deal with the Gay bashing incident between 2 marines and Kieran Daly-a Gay man who was found in Savannah with brain bruising, and is hospitalized as he continues to have seizures.

The two marines, Marines Keil Joseph Cronauer, 22, and Christopher Charles Stanzel, 23, were arrested and charged with beating up a Gay man, in downtown Savannah, according to the Savannah Morning News. The two men, who are stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C., are charged with misdemeanor battery assault on Daly, the newspaper reported.

Here is what reported so far:

The Marines told police they were being harassed by a gay man and wanted to get away from him, but witnesses contradicted that in the police report, according to the article. Police say one of the Marines hit Daly in the back of the head with his fist, knocking him unconscious, the newspaper reported.

“The guy thought I was winking at him,” Daly told the newspaper from his hospital bed. “I told him, ‘I was squinting, man. … I’m tired.’” Daly said he had two seizures after the assault and will have to stay in the hospital for several days, the newspaper said

Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga of Malawi

May 21, 2010

MALAWI-ARREST/Yesterday, a terrible event occurred. Our hearts go out to Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga who were sentenced to 14 years in prison for being a same-sex couple. This sends shockwaves of the awareness of hate all over the globe. We strongly urge the progressive people of Malawi to have strength in numbers to have these men released immediately. For the sake of your sons and daughters who, because of these strong men, will be stronger, not hide, and come out. Release these men!

Madonna, who adopted her 3rd child from Malawi had this to say:

I am shocked and saddened by the decision made today by the Malawian court, which sentenced two innocent men to prison.  As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation.  Today, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved.  I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi—and around the world—to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all.”

And the White House released a statement through Press Secretary Robert Gibbs:

“The United States strongly condemns the conviction and harsh sentencing of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga in Malawi. The criminalization of sexual orientation and gender identity is unconscionable, and this case mars the human rights record of Malawi. We urge Malawi and all countries to stop using sexual orientation or gender identity as the basis for arrest, detention, or execution.”

Letter from a Loving Mother

May 14, 2010

Map_of_Vermont_NAThis letter was written by Sharon Underwood from White River Junction, Vermont, USA) Read below…its a magnificent letter…

By SHARON UNDERWOOD
For the Valley News (White River Junction, VT)

Many letters have been sent to the Valley News concerning the homosexual menace in Vermont. I am the mother of a gay son and I’ve taken enough from you good people.

I’m tired of your foolish rhetoric about the “homosexual agenda” and your allegations that accepting homosexuality is the same thing as advocating sex with children. You are cruel and ignorant. You have been robbing me of the joys of motherhood ever since my children were tiny.

Alleged Murderer Pleads Guilty and Gets 99 Yrs.

May 13, 2010

2226542443_5481b41c51According to Juan Antonio Martinez Matos, he was in search of a female prostitute. He met a person believed to be a woman (Jorge Mercado) and went home with him. When Matos discovered the woman was a man, he went into instant rage and killed, dismembered, and burned Mercado’s body. Jorge Mercado was only 19 years young.

Matos pleaded guilty yesterday and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. What is still pending is whether the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Act come into play? Federal funds will not be available until next year, so its more of a waiting game for the grieving family and friends, but they can begin to attain some peace knowing Jorge’s killer is behind bars and justice was served.

Hurt for Who You Are. Young Man in Tulsa, OK. Beaten for Being Gay

April 6, 2010

234526475_b2ad624b39In Claremore, OK, just outside Tulsa, Phillip Nelson has been harassed based on his sexuality for the past month. Vandals have broken into his apartment, vandalized his home, and left a Bible carved with a slur word at his front door. Nelson was punched by vandals and told him he was going to die while being called a f*g as he was taking out the garbage. Since Oklahoma is trying to exempt itself from the national hate crimes law with Rep. Steve Russell’s bill that is passed in the state senate and is in review in the state house, this cannot be looked at as a hate crime, but only a breaking and entering. This is why hate crimes law must be in place everywhere. ALL must be protected so that justice will be given for those effected by these heartbreaking events.

We have experienced hate in Oklahoma. There have been a couple times where we’ve had to drive through that state and we avoid staying in it, and avoid getting pulled over due to an incident that occurred there last summer with state troopers. Troopers informed us that they get a lot of revenue due to issuing tickets on the interstates and roads to passing travelers. We know not all Oklahomans have hate, but maybe if more people of Oklahoma were more welcoming, people wouldn’t just pass through it or fly over it all the time. Read MORE

Gay Male Attacked in San Francisco

March 8, 2010

crimescene

On Friday, Mar 6, 3 cousins from Hayward, CA decided to shoot a bb gun at a man walking on 16th street. Investigators say the 3 men attacked him because they believed he was Gay. The 3 cousins also filmed the shooting. The 3 men were apprehended and released on 50K bond each.

The 3 men were only 24 years old. Is another generation in danger of inheriting the hatred from their elders, or is this act a cry for help to understand the unfamiliar? Why did this happen in a city that many think wouldn’t happen? To read more CLICK HERE

When Hate Strikes Home…

February 14, 2010

BlueIslandBridge

As Chicago and Chicagoland natives, it hurts when you fight for LGBT rights nationally and you still hear about the multitude of hate crimes that happen in your own neighborhood back home.

In Blue Island, Illinois an African-American, Gay, HIV+ male by the name of Demetrius Anderson is suing the Blue Island Police Department for alleging excessive force, malicious prosecution, and hate-crime worthy verbal assault on his supposed religion, sexuality, mental health, and HIV+ status.

Bilerico.com’s D Gregory Smith covered the story and when I saw the town he mentioned, my eyes bugged out. I grew up with some of the BIPD’s children and the one’s I knew were good people. Unfortunately, there are always some bad apples. I realize that no matter how many 1,000’s of miles away we moved, part of the rights we fight for are for our neighbors’ rights back home.
