Martina Navratilova Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

April 8, 2010

3510464109_5d3fe7608bTennis champion Martina Navratilova is unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. The openly Lesbian tennis player is in the early stages of treatment and will undergo radiation in May. Navratilova stated that she was shocked since being an athlete, she has always had good health.  She did state that she wished she went more often to get a mammogram so that they could have detected it sooner, even though they detected this cluster in her breast at a very treatable time.

According to CNN, officially, she is diagnosed with a non-invasive form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, which in her case was confined to the milk ducts and had not spread to the breast tissue. “It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer,” Dr. Mindy Nagle, a good friend of Navratilova’s (and her ob gyn)

We hope for the best for the tennis great and wish her good treatment and a road to being cancer free. We also hope that many women will get screened early and often.

Teacher of Equality Dies-Jaime Escalante

March 31, 2010

muralThe 1988 movie, Stand and Deliver, told the true story of Jaime Escalante-a Bolivian born math teacher who taught with a platform of inspiration. He turned a failing calculus program at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles to one of the top in the nation. According to actor Edward James Olmos, “he really made us understand that it didn’t matter what color, race, creed or ethnicity any of us are.” Many of the students he taught excelled in math and went on to have successful careers; they attribute their successes to Mr. Escalante’s teachings and legacy. He passed away from cancer at age 79 with his family at his side.
