How filing our taxes as a Gay married couple are different from heterosexual, married couples:
As we all know the federal government does NOT recognize us as a married couple even though WE ARE and it doesn’t even matter where we live. Even though we are in California (one of the 18,000 legally married couples). We will pay more in taxes and receive fewer benefits than married, opposite-sex couples receive. Only point number 1 and we are already getting heated.
In regards to tax preparation. Differences in state and federal filing rules mean that married, same-sex couples must calculate 2 sets of state tax returns. Guess what? That’s more time spent on those returns and, for same-sex couples using an accountant, that’s more of an expense.
Tax punch number 3 comes through employer-based health insurance benefits. Unlike coverage for opposite-sex spouses, benefits for legally married, same-sex spouses are taxed as income to the employee.
For same-sex couples who have real estate, they can file their real state returns as a married couple! Oh but wait, since federal law prohibits them from filing their federal tax return as a married couple, the forms require tax calculations from state returns completed as if they were single.
On and off screen, Dame Elizabeth Taylor enchanted the world with her acting, style, philanthropy, and advocacy. When actor Rock Hudson, who was her dearest friend, died of AIDS, Taylor heightened awareness to a then unknown disease. Taylor has raised/given more money to research in AIDS than all of her films gross combined.
Having visited the One Archives Library, we can easily agree its the largest library of LGBT history and research. Affiliated with USC, the library displays art, literature, photos, and much more!
We suggest everyone visit the One Archives, or find the LGBT Library in your area.
Since there are not many LGBT libraries, a great place to research may be a nearby college/university, a bookstore such as Barnes & Noble, small business bookstores in your local gay neighborhood, or of course online. Know YOUR history, trust us, its exciting!
Great interview with the late Harvey Milk on the show News Talk shortly before his assassination. This is over 30 years ago, and still, their conversation holds true to today’s politics

First of all, for those of you who voted, consider yourselves lucky, its quite a luxury to be able to have the final say…even though 10 years ago, our final say may have been altered [cough] Dade County, FL [cough]. As residents of California, we are happy with some of the results! Governor-Elect Brown, Lt. Gov-Elect Newsom, Sen. Boxer and others. However, we are unsettled by our home state of Illinois since Mark Kirk was elected US Senator-an anti-Gay individual who may cause trouble for himself more than others. READ HERE from Towleroad.
Why we picked out Mark Kirk to talk about is that there is this denial in the air. The air is thick with denial. Untruthful candidates-not that surprising, but do politicians have to change because of the 24 hr news cycle, and blogs? Or do they just have to be honest of who they are, where they are coming from, and maybe ask “Where will I be in X amount of years?” Will I be honest about who I am, telling my constituents that I was honest with them or myself, or just plain lied? It may be a victory for Mark Kirk, but the closet doors are creaking, and if the doors do open, what then?
We usually hate this question when asked in interviews, but if we really thought about it in a grand scale and asked candidates Where will you, your home life, your private life, sex life, future bills, future votes, strengths, and pending weaknesses will you see by the end of your first term? There would be some interesting answers. It needs to be asked more.
In LA on Sunday, many walked for AIDS in the 26th annual AIDS walk Los Angeles, raising funds for AIDS research and hopefully, one day-a cure. Everyone is affected by AIDS. The disease sees NO race, creed, color, gender, sexuality, or age. I remember being a child, and being educated on AIDS. I was very fortunate to have family and teachers who (even in a Catholic school) kept up to date and educated us on AIDS and STD’s so that we were prepared for the future. We were taught that AIDS/HIV effects everyone, and everyone must take the proper precautions as we become sexually active. Walk on!
In past postings, we have supported Newsom for Governor and we were disappointed that he decided to resign from the race. However, we are very happy that he is running for Lt. Governor of CA which enables him to serve as President of the State Senate and the Acting Governor of California in the event that the Governor is absent from the state or is unable to perform the duties of office, or if a vacancy of office occurs. Here is a commercial we are in listening to Mayor Newsom on his plans for California. (You can see the back of our heads anyway)
