Mayor Mitch Ward and EQCA
Earlier in the week, we did this post on Mayor Ward and his encounter with EQCA, please read below and find out what you can do to support Mayor Ward.
If you don’t know who Mitch Ward is yet, get on board and watch the video above! Mayor Ward of Manhattan Beach is the front-runner for the 53rd assembly race here in California. There are two polls currently showing Mitch way out in front of his opponents. Mayor Ward is the ONLY LGBT candidate in the race and he is kicking ass and taking names. Rarely do you meet an elected official, and we meet a lot of them, as sincere, caring, and truly passionate about his community. We’ve been honored to speak with the Mayor at a few events recently and each time he is beaming with a piece of new great news about the 53rd District. We don’t often gush over local politicians, but we expect to be following Ward for a long time and expect great things from him in the future. Here at EJ, we are often asked, where are the next great political leaders of the equality movement? Mitch Ward knows the fight and is ready to make equality a reality here in California. Mitch Ward can bring so much to the state assembly for so many communities that we all need to become fans of Mitch Ward and let him know he has the LGBT community support as the race heats up.

We were sick when we learned that groups like EQCA and HONOR PAC were not endorsing the LGBT candidate in the race; we assume to further their own political agenda’s while besmirching their normally good name. If these groups are going to be successful at fighting for equality, then they need to collaborate with an electorate that will spend their political capitol on equality, not tentative alliances for parceled progress. It is time for our fight to be fought by US!
If you believe that a heterosexual white woman can do more for LGBT equality than the African-American, homosexual Mayor, then you are simply naive. Sorry EQCA, you picked the wrong horse in this race… sound familiar? Time to either dual endorse or admit your blunder, we’ve forgiven you before. What was even more surprising was to see at the HRC Gala this weekend-Geoff Kors of EQCA sharing a dinner table with some of the Ward’s campaign staff. Now, we don’t know what was said over drinks from our vantage point, but we assume it was something like: “So the Mayor and his partner aren’t too upset not being supported by us professional queers right? Civil service is a bitch anyway right?” What seemed even more bizzar was one of the Mayor’s opponents in the race appeared to have crashed the same cocktails hour of the party. We didn’t even know they were going to be attending and it didn’t look like the Ward camp cared. We understand political desperation; it’s a rough race, but class counts-like poise in beauty pageants. We are delving further to learn more about the gala’s goings on, but neither SOCAL Edison (who invited Mayor Ward), or EQCA media departments returned our request for comment by deadline today.
We understand SOCAL Edison, last thing they need is too look bad in the 53rd District. But EQCA we, of all media outlets, deserve a response. Not only because they have our communities (and some of our) money but because EJ is read by more married, Gay couples and Gay individuals than they believe. Yes, as we fight for a large goal small line items like the EQCA endorsements may go overlooked, but when a Gay Mayor isn’t endorsed by EQCA then we know something is a foot.
What we ALL can do: Visit MitchWard.com and give/support till it hurts, tell your friends, and let the Mayor know we’ll all be fighting for him this Assembly race. Contact EQCA and demand an answer: we’ll be bringing you one here on EJ, we deserve it.
