Heading Home? Make your Fuel burn for Freedom!

February 21, 2010

gasSo here’s the scenario;

You’re driving down the road to your friend’s or family’s house and you see some exits coming ahead.  You look down to your dash and see that a gas refill would be a good idea. Now to pick an exit… which gas station to pick…

The following are corporate sponsors to the HRC and are taking the right steps towards helping us reach equality.

BP:Arco, Castrol, Chevron: Caltex, Texaco, Shell Oil

If there is a lot of competition around, let the owner know why you picked their business… the franchise owners can really pressure corporate to establish better ties in our community.

Carthage Students Rally Against Guest Speaker

February 19, 2010

Cathagemap

Carthage College is hosting a regional conference led and sponsored by Intervarsity.

“After an extensive investigation, it has come to light that the following speaker, Shannon Marion, will be presenting at this conference. Shannon Marion has stated that being homosexual is against God’s design, and therefore it is wrong. This will be at the core of his message that will be delivered to Intervarsity students that are coming from all over Southeastern Wisconsin.”

According to Intervarsity’s website, their purpose is this: “In response to God’s love, grace and truth: The Purpose of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God’s Word, God’s people of every ethnicity and culture and God’s purposes in the world.” EXCEPT FOR HOMOSEXUALS

Okay we added the “EXCEPT FOR HOMOSEXUALS” however, if both a representative and an organization’s purpose is to educate students to grow love for God and God’s people of every ethnicity and culture, why does it discriminate so openly?

If Mr. Marion is going to use discrimination at the core of his speech, then he already lost his purpose. Is it freedom of speech? Yes, but plain and simple its words of hate.

Thank you Kim for this story.

According to the Racine Post, to join the rally, here is whats going on:

  • Over the next three days, Carthage students will be standing united against Mr. Marion and his message.
  • Starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, Carthage students will be gathering at the Lincoln statue at the north end of campus to rally as a community united in favor of open dialogue that enables all sides to be heard. Members of progressive communities from Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago will also be in attendance to support the students.

If you are nearby, please join in the rally!

We definitely support the LGBT students and allies in the fight for equality. Go Red Men and Lady Reds!

Costs More $$$ to be a Married Gay/Lesbian Couple

February 19, 2010

unequalsignA man and a woman walk into the county clerk’s office, they spend $40.00 USD and they are wed and legally protected.

A man and a man, or woman and a woman walk into the county clerk’s office and they, well really don’t get anything.

To organize a will, benefits, and other legal protections could cost thousands, and that just the beginning. The Chicago Tribune featured the Wax-Pooley Family. Unlike the majority of heterosexual couples, they had to pay $10,000 USD for using wills, trusts, and powers of attorney (the protections a $40 marriage could afford). This family knew it was important to do this since they are parents to toddler twins who need to be protected as well.  Similar situation happened to the Walker-Ferguson Family-a Lesbian couple who are expecting (Melissa Walker is pregnant) and Erin Ferguson needs to spend $2,000 to adopt the child so they are both legally parents.

Whats common between these two couples is that they are doing it for the best interest of their partners and their children. In regards to protecting the family, homosexual couples are the same as heterosexual couples, yet, because of unfair recognition, there is a clear story here of inequality.

Running to be Statehouse’s 1st Openly Gay, African-American Lawmaker

February 18, 2010

WardAs we have posted before, Mitch Ward, Mayor of Manhattan Beach is running for Assembly for the 53rd District in California. The Bay Area Reporter recently posted a story regarding the campaigns for the 53rd seat.

Ward-a happily married man (he has been with his partner for 21 years) and two others are running for the same seat. The two others running are former boyfriend and girlfriend-Jim Aldinger and Betsy Butler. They had a messy, courtroom breakup which involved who got the sofa and who got the love seat. The other irony twist is that Butler-a straight, white woman has a lot of LGBT support on paper due to her outstanding advocacy of LGBT rights, and she sits on the Equality California Institute board. While Butler has fought for LGBT rights nationally, Ward has effectively fought for rights locally, both are very important.

EqualJunction is fans of Mitch Ward and this race should definitely be watched. LGBT has support from the candidates for the 53rd Assembly of CA, but it now comes down to, who will be effective locally to give greater progress not only for LGBT, but for jobs, public safety, and other issues that need to be addressed in that district.
